This one comes from one of my new favorite music blogs, Aquarium Drunkard.

Their RAM ON L.A. compilation is amazing. Amazing with a capital A. It’s covers of Paul McCartney’s 1971 solo album, RAM, post-Beatles but I think pre-Wings.

It’s free to download but any donations go to No More Landmines.

To download/donate/revel in its greatness, click here.

hope everyone’s having a great spring break! no show tonight since 2/3 of our show is in New Orleans. the other 1/3 is in Columbia and thus, updating this blog.

A perfect pop gem. I played it a couple weeks back and will be lobbying for it tomorrow night.

(this picture doesn't have anything to do with the post, I just wanted a picture)

I mentioned these on the show this past week so here are some links:

“Dark was the Night” compilation: http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Was-Night-Various-Artists/dp/B001KVW574

“War Child: Heroes” compilation: http://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Child-Heroes-Various-Artists/dp/B001O5ZNYS

I am psyched for the Grizzly Bear + Feist “Service Bell” on Dark Was the Night and the Franz Ferdinand cover of “Call Me” on War Child. I was a little disappointed in the Hot Chip cover of Joy Division’s timeless “Transmission,” but oh well.

Also, really, Lily Allen? “Straight to Hell?” Trying to cash in on the “Paper Planes” success? If you didn’t know, M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” borrows ridiculously heavily from the opening of the Clash’s “Straight to Hell.” “Straight to Hell” is definitely not my favorite Clash song but that opening is killer, part of why “Paper Planes” is such a smashing success. Well, it’s clever, I guess. I also just don’t really like Lily Allen much.

BUT check them out and benefit some great causes via the War Child organization and Red Hot (for AIDS).

Emaly and Julia couldn’t make it for this one, so Hannah from Mayoneggs Monday came in to help me out. Thus the sets are prettily heavily Kayla-esque with a hint of Hannah.

18 songs to close out 2008 December 19, 2008

What better way to celebrate the end of a pretty good year in music than with a playlist chock full of some of our (my) favorites from this year?

18 Songs to Close Out 2008:

White Winter Hymnal – Fleet Foxes: Fleet Foxes’ new album has been giving top rating on pretty much every major “Best Albums of 2008” list (Pitchfork, Paste, Spin, you name it.)

The Beach – Dr. Dog: this is jazzy stuff.

Still Here – Girl Talk: ok, so Feed the Animals is no Night Ripper, but it’s still pretty amazing and the “I got my drink and my two step” mash up is undeniable.

Furr – Blitzen Trapper

You! Me! Dancing! – Los Campesinos!

Nobody Lost, Nobody Found – Cut Copy: In Ghost Colours will always say 2008 to me. It also says amazing dance record. Nobody Lost, Nobody Found is a hidden gem.

Groundswell – Throw Me the Statue: Lolita and About to Walk won my heart. The rest of TMTS’s Moonbeams is still up in the air for me, but I do love Groundswell. Weird yet relatable lyrics (as usual) and sweet horns.

Out at the Pictures – Hot Chip

Eraser – No Age

2 Atoms in a Molecule – Noah and the Whale: my favorite off of their album, a sweet and sad little “love song.”

Satanic Messiah – the Mountain Goats (from the free Satanic Messiah EP)

What Up Man – the Cool Kids: The Bake Sale EP is old-school, clever hip-hop, practically perfect. The “tick tick clap” backing for this song takes a basic rap to the next level.

An Eluardian Instance – of Montreal

Walking – the Dodos

Campus – Vampire Weekend

I Thought I Saw Your Face Today – She & Him

In the New Year – the Walkmen: I bought You & Me on a whim and only recently really got into In the New Year, but it’s a perfect year-closer.

Air War – Crystal Castles
